American English is great when you live in America. British English is great when you live here in England.. They are both just as good.. it really is the accents and slangs (oh and that tiny spelling differences) that makes the difference. Personally I am a sucker for American accents.. and Americans to mine.. we all live happily ever after..

The difference is mostly in the pronunciation and spelling of words. The British tend to spell (-re) and the Americans use (-er) and the vowels sounds are a bit different but the reason we don't spell everything the shortest way possible without changing the sound, is because it's a uneducated, lower-class way to do things and it makes it more difficult for people learning english as a second language. There are certain rules for spelling and modifying the spelling of words would completely contradict and confuse.

Neither is better. Both are different in pronounciation, vocabulary, and grammatical rules. All languages and all dialects are equal in their communicative ability. The chauvinistic attitudes of the British notwithstanding, American English is no more "ungrammatical" or "full of slang" than British English is. The person who said the British "speak proper English" has obviously never seen any British films lately and lives in a bubble. LOLOLOL.

I think British English is better ... but that's because I'm English! I'm biased, and I'm happy to admit it!!
; )

For the same reason, most Americans get really uptight if anyone suggests that British English is better! But really they're both equal - the only real difference is that if you're in America, people will understand you more easily if you use American terms, and if you're in Britain, people will understand you more easily if you use British terms.

I don't know why they don't officially abbreviate the words you mentioned though ... some of the Americans on here use the spellings you suggested anyway!!

The only time I get annoyed by American English, is when people tell me that I pronounce things wrong, or use the wrong word!! AND it pi$$es me off a lot when people on here accuse me of making typing errors, just because I use British spellings!! (I don't accuse THEM of making spelling errors!)

British English is [i guess you mean the queen's English] is the classical English. It's older than American English and very standardized. The main difference are in pronunciation and spelling.E.g Americans will spell color while Britons will spell colour. Americans basically spell as they pronounce while Britons follow tradition. Pronunciation wise Americans tend to apply one rile for all. So they pronounce almost all i's the same as in ice. e.g anti, semi

I am Asian Chinese.

I will never allow my secretary or my managers to changed my document (MS Word) into US English.

For me, it is not who is better, but character. As I have learned British English since Primary School, why must I changed it now and lost my personal character? I see no reasons.

Some of my staff told me it is for standard sake. But my reply is, who's standard? Microsoft? Just because US English is the default language, I should follow?

i prefer Brirish English, not just because i'm british, Americans speak much broader than we do and as someone already stated they also use a lot of slang. British speak with an air of authority which i find i like. they also tend to pronounce most of the letters in the word, where others tend to miss them out.

Learn UK English (from London if possible) because then they'll understand you wherever you go.This is why you are learning English, to communicate.
If you learn American English you might have problems because the English they speak in the USA stemmed from the original UK English then it changed as languages do.
It isn't English any more but Effectively American.
I am Italian and once I had to translate between an American and a Scottish guy as they couldn't communicate with one another.
How funny is that :-)

British English has more proper language. American English is based mostly on new slang words and abbreviations and other crap. British English is better because it helps you in the business world. I doubt you want to go to a job interview saying "Yo Yo Yo! WAZZUP??".

I think that american english is full of slang, so much that not even the americans understand it sometimes. Their accent sounds awful.
British english sounds very nice, very beautiful. It is a pleasure to hear it
