It's a distraction + it's relaxing (especially when you have something crunchy). Also, some foods physically relax you.

I have the same problem. Sometimes stress works with us either eating or having so much energy that we can't stop doing things, like cleaning. I believe that things like chocolate help when you have tension, because it makes you feel better, thus calming some of the tension

Eating is usually a pleasurable activity and feeling good is preferable to feeling tension, anxiety, stress, etc. Eating is also pretty easy, food is easily accessable.

Seeing as too much food can lead to being overweight, another way of dealing with tension or stress is to find easy ways to exercise, like isometrics.

I feel that I sometimes handle stress/tension by eating junk food because it is a immediate gratification and, very temporarily, takes my mind off whatever is bothering me. I believe many people do the same.

It's common to eat when your stressed. Try a different approach, walk, lift weights , or go for bike ride !
