One question a psychologist would ask would be: What causes mental illness? Some theorize that it is genetic. Others say that it is a chemical imbalance. Others would say that it is because of environmental experiences like they experienced something tragic, they were abused physically, mentally, sexually, etc.
I say most mental illnesses are a direct result of a person who has not forgiven some one who has done them wrong. Also, the person is not right with God (the Lord Jesus Christ, that is.) The Bible says in 2 Tim 1:7: " God did not give us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind." Fear here means a lack of courage and confidence. Many mentally ill people don't have courage and confidence. Power here means ability. Many mentally ill people are incapable of functioning in the real world that is why they are in a mental institution. Love here is the kind of love that shows action. The Bible defines this kind of love in 1 Cor 13:4-7. Love is patient, kind, not boastful, not arrogant, not self seeking, not rude, not easily provoked to anger, and is forgiving. Many mentally ill people are incapable of expressing that kind of love. Sound mind here means a disciplined mind or the ability to control their behavior. Many mentally ill people are incapable of this.
Jesus is the cure for mental illness. Receive Him now as Savior and Lord.
