The most famous restaurant in New York is the 21 Club. It is located at 21 West 252nd. It originally started as a speakeasy during Prohibition. There is also Upstairs at 21 which is open for dinner only. 21 has also been entrusted with the private wine collections of such celebrities as Presidents Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon, Elizabeth Taylor, Hugh Carey, Ivan Boesky, The Nordstrom Sisters, Eva Gabor, Aristotle Onasis and Sammy Davis, Jr.

21 is not a private club, but reservations are required. Diners should expect to spend at least $100 per person (a hamburger and fries at lunch costs $27), and men are required to wear a jacket and tie. Denim attire (e.g. jeans) or sneakers are not permitted, without exception.

Obviously, start with the best. Jean Georges at Trump Int'l serves French from a unique chef, Jean Georges. 3 star michelin and ranked top 15 in the world by British magazine. Wooden floors, uber-chic, classic sophistication. Want more? Alain Ducasse has a more elegant dining room. Not his main restaurant though, but still worthy enough and very beautiful. Both are highly recommended. Hope this helps!

I love Eleven Madison Park. It's not the MOST elegant - but the building it's in is fantastic - it's a cool old art deco style gigantic room. The staff are awesome, - really nice and friendly and Knowledgeable without being haughty. But the Food is Amazing, and the wine selection is awesome. It's a little less pricey than Le Cirque, and probably not quite as formal - but it's more fun, unusual and really really delicious.
