I was homeless once when I lost my job and apartment at about the same time. I was too proud to go begging on the street. My only food for about 6 weeks was sugar packets and ketchup that I got at MacDonald's, I later found a place where they would give donuts and coffee for breakfast and another place where they gave a full hot meal for dinner. The poblem was that the two places were like 15 miles apart. so, it took most of the day to walk from one to the other. Soon, I discovered a blood bank that would pay $10 twice a week for donations; and was able to fill my bag with sardines and crackers and Top Ramen; and didn't have to walk all day. Sometimes, I would buy a jar of peanut butter and get a plastic knife from MacDonalds. It was so nice to have a fresh onion to cut up on my sardines. I had no way to cook the Top Ramen, so I ate that right out of the package. For a real treat, I would buy egg rolls at the Chinese restaurant for 50 cents. Two of them made a real meal.

My family used to recylce pop bottles to buy potted meat (Yuk but $0.19/can) & Vienna sausages. My husbands family (6 people) would shredd up some lettuce on a plate & add a little ground beef and some vinegar & oil but thats sounds gourmet next to some stories here!! Now I don't have to worry about it. Because we live in Alaska we have all the moose, salmon and halibut we can eat for free!

I lived with an artist who was so broke he stole the display bread from out the front of the turkish bread shops in Melbourne. The display bread must have been days old. I got so sick of him starving in the front room that I made him a pan of bacon and eggs. It was the first real food he'd had for three weeks. Great painter though.

When I was first starting up my business from absolutely nothing... those little frozen bean burritos, 3 for 99 cents. I could stretch that for two days with instant hot chocolate I nabbed from my landlord's coffee room and the free apples they give out in some of the health clubs.

I was once so poor that I had to mix water with flour and make unleavened bread in a skillet.

we used to go to nice hotels, walk around the floors and look for room service-delivered food that was left for pick-up that wasn't eaten and/or partially eaten. whatever wasn't really disgusting was breakfast, lunch and/or dinner...
