Will mixing the two cause battery acid to secrete between the batteries or other problems? I have a bet with my co-workers about this so any information will be greatly appreciated.

As long as the old battery isn't completely dead, they will be ok. But if it's completely dead, it causes the acid to swell from the electricity running through it when it has nowhere to feed it's electrons, as the metal is now inert. I had it happen to me with a flashlight. I would say it's ok, but it's risky.

The battery becomes a dead short conductor, causing it to heat up, thereby swelling the acid. It happens, but you really have to run it for a while.

But I mix old batteries all the time. tape recorders don't really pull alot of load, so, I could imagine the batteries would probably never overheat in that case. But for low-impedance loads such as flashlights, there is a significant risk.

well if you mix old batteries with new ones you would obtain the same voltage , but lower current.what i mean: tha voltage of a consumed cell is about 1v...1,4v , same close to a charged one.but a charged one can do let's say 500mah, whilst a discharged one can only provide 100mah.this only causes poor performance.as for exploding...it is not possible.leaking acid....well it's the same thing as if u'd put only used batteries.when they're really really worn out, they act as a resistor , a very low value one (that means it won't heat up) and the electron flow will continue, it won't cause it to magically leak acid,it will just continue discharging it until indeed itt will leak acid, but that is the same thing as u would have just used that battery.
hope this helps

it doesn't matter. i do it all the time when i don't have enough new batteries. it's just that the tape recorder won't last as long if it has one old battery and one new one. i've never had the batteries secrete acid or have any problems.

well yeah cos if the old ones run out first, and the new ones are still running, the tape recorder will stop. u might think all the batteries are dead and u might throw away good batteries. but as for the scientific side of it, i dont think there shud b any probs..just as long as the old batteries arent expired!!

if you mix old batteries with new freshly-charged ones in
the same appliance, the batteries can overheat
and rupture. However, its not common at all with weak powered AA bateries. This is more of a problem with much higher powered batteries.

yes , because the old one will be another load added to the total load of the device because of the internal resistance of the battery, and that will cause a shorter time of work to the new one.

I've always been told not to mix batteries...but I've always done it and never had anything go wrong.

I bet you're the type who takes the numberplates of surrounding cars when parked, just in case someone dings you...

yes it is wrong.
batteries are very very particular with whom they associate.
i guess its a form of battery racism.

yeah i mix them and flip them and i haven't had anything explode yet. although who knows...there's a first for everything i guess.
