Actually, ice cream used to be served whole, bones and all. In the beginning of the 20th century when purification techniques where certainly less than standard, many pieces of bone would actually make it through to the consumer. This is when flavors such as Almond Crunch and Nutty Delight were at their peak of popularity. It wasn't until the dawn of mechanical separation in the 1950's that the bones were able to be removed consistently and succesfully. The technique has dramatically improved from the 50's and since then, they have developed methods to remove small stones, insects, and even rat ****. With modern day technology, at least we can be sure that our chocolate chips are indeed chocolate chips.
