Ethically you cannot tell him unless it is a business relationship you are looking for (eg he's a dr. you are a nurse)...
If you are looking for any other type of relationship (ie friendship or more) you will have to wait until he has been released and then have some time pass (at least a few months) before you can give him the message...

Do you only want to know him on a professional level? If that is the case, just talk to him. Now, if you are interested in him as a boyfriend, let him know in a flirtatious way. My sister who was a nurse, just gone through a nasty divorce, and had four preteens, meant her the love of her life, the best father to her children, and her husband of thirty years, while working. Do what ya gotta do.

Tell him when he leaves, because of course it is not professional to have relationship with him when you work there.
On the day that he leaves, let him know that you are interested in seeing him outside of the hospital, and after that, he will be part of your personal life, only, your personal life.
Hope it goes well! =]

Know that if you don't you'll suffer for it so don't let fear paralyze you for starters. If you make a lot of eye contact and show attention he should get the message unless of course he just had a major stroke or his eyes were destroyed, in which case you may have to use other methods.
Ask for his email address because you want to check up on him and make sure he is okay.

since you can get fired for flirting with patients, it is best to find a way if he likes you. go in the room with another co-worker and then excuse yourself for a minute. have your co-worker mention to the patient like she is so sweet and pretty. your a lucky patient. see the reaction she gets. if its positive and he likes you then ask your friend to ask like she's single if your interested and if he is then have her get his number. at the va i go to i've been out with nurses, pa's and doctors. many were set up by my doctors introducing me to them so its not conflict or patient involvement.

You should let him know by doing little things, like flirting. Then see how he responds. If he doesnt get the hint just come out and tell him how you feel.
