The sad truth is you probably can't get people to vote for you, but you might get people to "not" vote for the other guy. I wish it we're different.

If you had enough money to put out a positive message in such overwhelming repetitiveness you might get people to vote for you - if the message was great.

The thing you have to do to get everyone to vote for you is to show up everywhere. You need to canvass the whole area where you are running for office and knock on every door in your district. You need to leave flyers with your picture on it, your name needs to be everywhere. Your picture needs to be everywhere. The more you get your name out there, the more people will remember you.

The way to get people to vote for you is to convince them that you are like them. Don't go where the controversy is. Don't exhibit any liberal or conservative labels. Don't say anything controversial.

It depends on where you live, also. If you live in a major metropolitan area, you don't have a very good chance for winning an election if you are a Republican. If you are running in the Burbs, you can be a Republican. But inner city politics is almost always Democratic. Check out the party affiliations of people in neighboring districts and see if you fit in.

A great politician knows that the best politicians are neighbors on their own block. They make sure they are seen as family members and members of a church community and they have some involvement outside of politics. It's like the former Speaker of the House, Tip O'Neil said, "All politics is local." Man, was that guy right.

If you can't win at your own breakfast table, you won't make it in politics.

You must first make it absolutely clear what your positions are on various topics. People do not appreciate a person who is not firm in their positions. I would also want to get to know "the man behind the mask" so to speak. I need to know who you are and what you believe. I would also want to know your history and past political behavior. Also, qualities such as personality and charisma, morality and character are important elements for any political figure. What distinguishes great politicians from mediocre ones is being a voice for the people. Their concerns should be reactive to socities needs, wants and desires. Remember this is a democracy and not an autocracy. Leadership positions are created by the people and for the people. (If you found this helpful, could you make this your best answer? Thanks)

A "good" politician is one with good leadership skills. Someone that has held a leadership position and developed a following. This could be a leader of a corporation, or in public service area. Someone with good public speaking skills and good ideas.
If you can put together your resume of what you've accomplished in a leadership position, list your supporters, and have a solid plan that you wish to implement I might consider you. But most important of all is that you must promise to remain loyal to the people that elect you.
