The best asana would likely be Shirsasana, the headstand, which has been harolded as the "king of all asanas".

The best way to go into deep meditation, on the other hand, is unrelated. Identify yourself as the witness of your tho'ts and not the thinker of them, the witness of your emotions and not the whole of which they are a part, and the witness of your physical sensations and not the body in which they manifest. In this way, no tho't, emotion, or sensation can interrupt your experience of being.

On the guru issue, I can't help, other than to recommend a reading of the books written by Eckhart Tolle.

Padmasana is the best of remaining. And Sukhasana is also very good.
Chanting of one mantra given by Guru is enough to go deep in to meditation.
Even u can chant the name of God u like. And one more thing to follow, u never care any thoughts or things or happenings in ur surroundings, while u r in meditation. Leave the world. That's enough.

the best way is to sit crosslegged likemost of the yogis
take deep breathe for three-four minutes & then try concentrating on an object (open eyed-for beginners)..
after some days of practice you'll find it very relaxing &then you
can close your eyes & try focussing on distant /supernatural elements like your fav. god/idol ,stars ,northern lights......
meditation is actually a state of peace &relaxing..
it's not that you go into an entirely new world (which is a common notion)
after lots of practice you'll find it quite easy...
technically this is simpler version of "pranayaam"...
