Windows registry is just another tool windows as an operating system is using to store data. What the registry is basically a collection of keys and values attached to them. The values will be usually represented as a HEX number. I believe that starting with the XP version of Windows Microsoft is trying to move away from storing data in the registry into storing it either in the DLLs or in the Common Storage Area. Reason is all the windows applications Have become so dependent on the registry its enough they change a permission or a value and the entire system crashes.
