You collected government assistance for six months due to loss of job? and if yes how long is that ban. For example if I wanted to sponsor my Canadian wife to the US and I lost my job then collected govenment assistant for six months but no longer recieving it. How long until after I stop recieving govenment assistant may I sponsor her? I heard 3 years then 1 year. This has nothing to do with me i'm just curious.

I presume you're asking about immigration. If so, there is no ban such as you mention. If you can't support the person you are petitioning for, you have to find what is called a "joint sponsor," someone else who is willing to provide support as needed.

most sponsorships are one year unless on a student visa then its four years. many exchange students switch families and live with a family for a year. from there they would have to apply for a student visa as full time status. with the new homeland security changes, its best to check with i ins attorney.
