Mexican vw bugs are not legal for sale in the united states because they don't meet the stringent guidelines from the EPA on tailpipe emissions. they don't have any pollution control devices and are very bad for our atmosphere. you might be able to buy one illegally but if you live in a state that has emissions testing as a requirement for vehicle registration you won't be able to drive it very long.

Check out thesamba.com and do search in the forums over there the subject has been covered many times. The most common way to make it legal is to put the mex beetle on an old pan(say a 72 just for an example), thus make the car in the eyes of the DMV a 1972 beetle(you'll have to use the old vin not the new one) and only having to meet the regs for what ever year the pan is. Or you can just look for one all ready in the states and save all the trouble, but they run at $10,000+ depending on condtion and all that.

Production of Old Beetles (or "Classic Beetles") ceased in Mexico in 2003, since the Beetle didn't even meet Mexican air pollution standards.

However, you can still buy New Beetles, Diet Beetles, Caffeine Free Beetles, and so on.

There were some imported by a company in Texas, their website is gone. Yes, they met all US requirements. If you look on eBay you may find one. Try doing a yahoo search on mexican beetles. Technically, they weren't VW's. In Brazil, they still make transporters.

I love all the ignorant people who dislike Mexican people who are just trying to start a life. It's a shame how poorly educated people are nowadays. And no I'm not Mexican, I am just an opened minded individual

I have a 1999 Mex Bug. It was legitimately imported to the US by a now defunct company named Classic Bug. I have a legitimate 1999 title and have had it registered to two different states. It now has about 30K miles and has factory AC.

The old style air cooled engine Beetle is no longer made.VW stopped production in 2003.The plant was reworked to manufactor the New Jetta, which was intoduced here late in 2005.Many of these cars were built and used all over Mexico and South America. Will not pass any sort of US emission testing though. But I have had customers here who have them(more for a novelty than anything else). The NEW Beetle is a much improved, safer, more powerful, and more fun to drive car.Check it out.vwjcook@yahoo.com

The old beetle is still made in Mexico as well as the new beetle. The old one will not pass emission or safety laws in the USA. If you really want an old beetle, buy one that is already in this country. But why the heck would you want one of those death traps?
