Well, despite what some churches teach, Jesus did actually drink wine. If you read the account where Jesus turned water into wine, you'll notice that the overseer of the feast alluded to the fact that it would be possible to become intoxicated from the wine Jesus had produced (John 2:9, 10). Some claim that it was just grape juice that Jesus drank, but if that were the case, Jesus' enemies would have no reason to claim he was a drunkard (of course he wasn't a drunkard, but they claimed he was because he drank alcoholic wine Matthew 11:18, 19).
The Bible shows that alcoholic beverages used in moderation is actually good for you (Psalm 104:15; 1 Timothy 5:23). This holds true today, since studies have shown that it is good for your heart and helps lower cholesterol. Of course, the Bible condemns drunkeness of all types (1 Corinthians 6:9, 10)
Alcohol is frowned on by many religions because of the trouble people have gotten into while using it. Although, a person needs to exercise great care in using alcohol, being sure to only use it in compliance with Bible and Government guidelines, there is nothing wrong with the drinking of alcoholic beverages in God's sight. -Isaiah 25:6
A person has to use his conscience and good judgement to know when to quite drinking.

I am not familiar with many churches that actually teach the concept that drinking is a sin. Generally protestant churches do teach the idea of abstaining from liquor. For some denominations this goes as far as being incorporated into their doctrine.
However, realize that they are not necessarily stated that drinking is a sin, but instead they believe that drinking may lead to other sins when one loses control over themselves. For instance if drinking turned to violence or infidelity. In their beliefs, it is better not to put oneself into a compromising situation. Also during the time when these doctrines were formed, you have to realize that the main place for consumption of alcohol were bars which was filled with drinking, gambling, fighting, prostitution and other debauchery.
In addition, the consumption of alcohol for some may eventually lead to alcoholism which again can lead to other sins. Some churches also view the body as being sacred and will preach the importance of maintain a clean body. (this will also be used to teach against tattoos)
Finally, in the church one fundamental teaching is that each person in the church family is to act as a "witness" or teacher to spread the gospel. Some feel that ones credibility or strength as a teacher may be lessened if they have issues involving alcohol.

The sin is not with drinking it is with drunkenness. In most cultures it is customary to drink wine at weddings and such. However while drinking is not a sin by doing it you are walking into your own temptation, I think. Most people get drunk off of one beer while it takes more for others but if I know I may get drunk why would I drink. hmmmmmmmm.

Christ drank wine, he even told us that when we did we should think of it as his blood, and if you have ever had some good wine, it makes sense, but that also doesnt give you permission to get drunk all the time, and the apostles were not dunk at pentacost, like the previous poster seemes to think, that was just what some of the crowd said after they saw all of these men talking in tounges which sounded like gibberish to them.

Someone will say that it wasn't fermented but why later do they say something about being drunk with wine when the Disciples were speaking in each person's language?

drinking is not a sin. but getting drunk is a sin. the bible tells us that one can drink but a certain extand. that tells us that we can drink but just to our limits and not get drunk. its a sin to get drunk. jesus uses wine to symbolise his blood that is shared to us. so why not drink, the bible didnt say its a sin but it state that its a sin to get drunk. party or no party just dont get drunk. your church might be playing safe so that you guys dont get drunk and that a sin.

Jesus always invited lots of prostitutes to his parties, and he made plenty of wine for everyone. I fear the devil has caused your church to fall from the truth and it's preaching "another gospel".
