Because being on love makes u whole. Your just half without anybody. But i do agree with u, about loving yourself, but i think being in love makes u love yourself even more.

Every person loves himself first.
In order to love yourself, you may
have a desire to love some one.
By loving someone, you satisfy
your wish.
Secondly, when you love someone,
the other person also reciprocates,
and makes it further wonderful.

You answered your own question.......because they don't know how to love themselves they in turn seek love externally from other sources and most times the wrong sources.
