For a cat keep a water pistol with you and fire it when the cat does something wrong. A very small amount of amonia in the water helps ( very small amount or you will blind the cat ) The cat thinks some larger more powerful animal is peeing on it in dissaproval and so stops. She will not associate the water to you. A cat will want to sit on the furniture with you so also try giving her her own cushion.

To start with, never hit a dog or cat. People will tell you it works, but authority through fear is nothing like as good as through understanding. Mother dogs do not hit, and unless you are pinpoint accurate with your cruelty, it is unlikely your pet will understand. There is a three way approach to this;
1. Make it seem a good idea to be on the floor
2. Make it seem a bad idea to be on the furniture
3. Add a command to remove pet from furntiure
For it to be a good idea for an animal to be on the floor, it has to be good! Play on the floor, feed on the floor, reward and cuddle on the floor. Come down to their level, and make them enjoy being on the floor. Use a clicker, treats and a silly voice. My dog learns new tricks in less than a minute using this method.
Also, make it seem unpleasant to be on the furniture. One I like is to fill a tin can with pebbles and drop it on the floor when they go on the furniture. They don't like the noise. If your pet is very skittish, don't use this method. Baking sheets laid on the sofa shock animals when they jump us- it is unpleasant. Water spray does work, but I'd use it when other methods have failed. When the animal is on the sofa, without making eye contact put it on the ground. Wait a few seconds, and then praise for being on the floor. Use an interruptor, like a bicycle horn, to break theirm concentaration, then use a command (I use 'Off!') to get them off. Praise them when they do it. Imprtantly, animals do not make associations like we do. If you tell a dog he must stay off the sofa, he will not understand that this mean's all other furniture and other people's sofas as well. You have to teach him that. And if you don't want them on the sofa, don't ever let them on there, even for a special cuddle. It will only confuse them.

It is MY opinion that if people do not want teir pets on their furniture, then they shouldn't have any animals. You cannot keep them off, even if you think they are trained to stay off, the second you leave, they are on the furniture.

Your animals want to be where you are, they smell your scent on the furniture and want to be there..

I have 10 dogs and they all get on the furniture, I LIKE that they are right there with me. Now Peppe, she is 65 pounds and she does not get on the furniture, except when we leave..LOL

My home is so dog friendly that we went out and bought leather furniture so it would be easy to keep clean;-)

Get a spray that has sour apple in it, this really offends sensitive noses that cats and dogs have but will not bother a person. You can generally find these kinds of things at a pet store. It also will not ruin your furniture.

1. Don't have furniture.
2. Don't have a cat or a dog.

To be honest, I don't really understand this "keep the animals off the furniture" thing. I find it so much more comfortable, sitting on the floor .....

Whenever a cat gets on a couch, pick her up and hold her like a football. Then face a wall. With the cat still in your hand, move your arm back a little bit. Then quickly move it forward and right after your hand is forward, release the cat. This is an ancient practice known as "throwing a cat at a wall". Works well with brick walls.

You can get a spray called 'pet behave', i used to use it for my cat bit i guess it would work for dogs too. You just spray the area you want to keep the pets away from. It seemed to work

There are a bunch of things you should know about dog training but we are going to discuss what I feel are some the most important. Keep in mind that these are only some of the things you should know. Go here http://OnlineDogTraining.enle.info/?LN2H

1. Repetition is the number 1 principle of dog training. Dogs just like humans learn by doing things over and over in order to get better.

2. Dog Training can and should be fun for both you and your new pet.

3. Training sessions should always be short but sweet. I never work a dog more than 15 minutes in a session to keep from losing the dog's attention. You should train you dog at least once a day but never more than three formal sessions a day.

4. Your goal should be that each training session is just a little bit better than the last one. You need to always strive to make the training better, slowly. I mention this because quite often I see people who do daily training sessions but the dog never gets better and it is not the dogs fault.

5. Having patients is very important in dog training. Losing your temper does not work with a canine it simply makes things worse.

6. Exercise is very important in the training process to get rid of all the dogs nervous energy.

7. Taking your pet for walks is very important because it develops serotonin which gives your dog a feeling of well being.

8. Always be sure to give your dog a bunch of praise in your training. It is your dog's paycheck for doing a great job.

9. Never hit your dog. I have heard people say I never hit my dog instead I roll up a magazine and swat it. It's the same thing... hitting is hitting.

10. After each training session be sure to do something that your dog will enjoy. Take it for a walk, throw the ball or maybe even rub its belly. Just do something that makes the dog look forward to the next training session.

These are things that I teach my dog training students as well as my dog training clients. I hope these things will give you something to think about when training your dog. Spend some time training your dog daily and you will both reap the benefits.

You can put chille powder on it so that they get a bad smell and dont want to sit on it.

Or just shake a can with rocks in it when they are on it so they get scared when they are on the furniture.
