i've been thinking how all of us christians know these secular songs, no matter the genre, and we still go to the club, and a lot of us say it's okay as long as you don't do all the other stuff that gets you in trouble, i have seen gospel artist say they listen to many diffferent secular artist...i've seen christian plays and movies with cursing in it and some major preachers and teachers of america promoting it, even those that preach strictly on holiness....what's okay in this world today....do we seperate ourselves at all or is it okay to listen to secualr music and if so which artist....i'm somewhat confused on what God would have me to do....we should keep up with the times and with our youth, but should we know the lyrics by heart and be dancing to them too? holla back!

it's impossible to be perfect but is that a cop out, an excuse to do what we want?

Christ did not preach that we should separate ourselves from the world. We live in this world with others who don't believe, have fallen or have have lost their way. He fully understood that we will have to pay unto Caesar what is Caesar's.

To function in this world you have to know what is going on around you. You have to know and understand the temptations. And you have to know how to interact with everyone.

Christ did not separate himself from the world. He embraced the very people that the Pharisees thought were nothing but dirt, including a certain Roman tax collector. That does not mean that Christ was of this world, giving in to the temptations. He was able to resist the temptations through his inner strength.

Christians believe that we are all called to bear witness to our faith to nonbelievers, to minister to the rest of the world. The best way to do so is not by preaching to others, but by living according to Christ's teachings and being a living example of that life. Christ drank wine, he attended dances and parties. He greeted all and welcomed them as friends.

As long as you are strong in Christ, you can attend secular movies, dance, sing secular songs, drink wine or beer. The key is moderation and resisting temptation (which means knowing what your limits are and what your values are). Your example and friendship can be the salvation for many. The secular world does not want to be preached at. But those who are ready will come to you and ask what your secret is for avoiding temptation even when you are surrounded by it.

Let your faith, your understanding and your values be your guide in all things.

Have you heard God speaking through music? I have heard Him many times bring convictions using the words of a secular music...the words just piece through your heart. The bible when you read it, you don't pick up the real dept of it right away but as you meditate on it, you find that there are more truths in it, so is music sometimes. What doesn't condemn you doesn't make you sin and it's certainly not wrong to listen and to dance to any moral secular songs (as long as it's not in the bar or clubs because that's being worldly or such) because we live in this world; would God have us to experience things in this world and just live a boring life in heaven? David danced, even he was naked and people despise him, God didn't condemned his heart. As for movies, here's what I understand, movies should portray a real life experiences and people who doesn't respect God curse, will it be believable if the villains acts like the good guys? Yes, keep up with your youth but know your limitations too. Music that promotes sex, alcohol and drugs is banned. If you don't feel comfortable listening to a type of music then don't. Use your discernment power and ask for the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

God bless.

You ask a very good question. We live in a very fallen society where virtually everything you see in the media is evil, designed by the evil one to bring down someone. The Bible says that Satan roams around like a lion looking for someone to devour.
You obviously have a good heart and are considering how you should act as a Christian. This is great. The problem is, that unless you isolate yourself completely, which you are not suppose to do, you will have problems. You are to be light and salt to the outside world. So be light and salt, go to the movies (not the real bad ones), dance and listen to music but alway witness to people why some songs are bad and why some movies are also bad.
God Bless

If you are a Christian, you are wearing the Armor of God- I listen to music that many would consider satanic because of some of the lyrics- and the music that accompanies it- but in my heart I dont forget my love for Jesus.

I may bang my head, but I will never thrash my soul!

It is a great question though because just becauseI do what I do, dont mean I am right either. The Bible says what is not of God is evil and that we shouldnt yoke ourselves to it or partake in it. BUT with that in mind- there are many other things in this world that would fall under the evil category as well that our most admired Christians do as well.

Think about it, how many times have you been to a church function and had to listen to people gossiping? Thats evil too, at least that what I would think!

What saith the scriptures?
2 Corinthians 6:17 Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
1 Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light;
Romans 12:2 And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.
Ephesians 5:8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
I could go on all night quoting scripture...think about it...where do you think the apostasy Paul talks about in 2 Thesselonians 2 begins? Timothy discusses this as well. Slowly but surely, Satan is getting His hooks into the churches...preachers endorsing the world instead of the gospel of Jesus Christ. I will keep you in my prayers and will ask that God helps you see the way He wants you to go.

You have to walk the narrow pathway. In other words, it's like what Paul told the Corinthians on the one hand...

1 Corinthians 5:9 I wrote unto you in an epistle not to company with fornicators: 10 Yet not altogether with the fornicators of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or with idolaters; for then must ye needs go out of the world.

And what John the beloved wrote on the other hand...

1 John 2:15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

To be an effective witness for Christ you can't totally isolate yourself from the things or people of this world. You just have to keep your heart sanctified and don't engage in activities that have the appearance of evil like listening to secular songs that glorify sins like fornication.

Please read the story of Joseph (son of Isreal). God used Pharoh to raise up Joseph to later save (and therefore bless) Isreal. God can inspire non-believers to assist, support and help believers. So, to directly answer your question, some music - though secular - can be totally spiritually edifying. Listen to "Hey Jude" for example.

Two things that might help you further are these:

1)We are called to be IN the world, but not OF the world. Who knows: you, going to clubs every Thursday night, might have you run into a woman who was just punched in the face by her husband at that club, and you are there to minister to her and tell her that men should NEVER do that and you are the one that will help free her from this abuse.

2)We are the salt of the earth. We are here to "season" things. How can you season the food if you don't taste it? Remember that God loves you, and He is very much interested in how you season the food before you -- not as a test, not as a trick, but because he looks at you as a chef in training. "Huh, let's see what 'dinner' 'sistagirl' is going to make out of these raw incredients."

... let your light so shine before men.

Here are some simple guidelines that I have used:
Would I take Jesus in the club? Would I carry a Bible there? Does everyone there know I love Jesus? Is Jesus using me there to spread His Message of hope and salvation?
As far as listening to songs-would Jesus sing that song with you?
If you would answer no to any of the above, then pray for God's grace to turn from it and He will enable you to live more holy everyday. As your humility grows stronger toward God and man you will experience supernatural understanding of exactly how to address your culture without compromising that to which what He has called you. Peace in Jesus Sista!!

When i was younger I was invited to a club by some running buddies of mine that I hung out with in my previous partying and drinking days. They knew that I was a Christian and that I would not drink or do the humpty hump dance. But I agreed to go and hang with them and be their designated driver.

While I was there I was hit on alot by a few guys and it was making me uncomfortable and I continued to turn them down. Of course a few wanted to know why so I told them and one thing led to another and very soon I was surrounded by at least 40 people listening to my Testimony.

I was in the game room area which was separate from the dance hall, and they played there own separate music in there, and would you believe that the music in that room got turned down so low that people could actually hear me talk without shouting.

Alot of those people started going to church and a few of those got saved and continued to go to church! So it just goes to show that no matter where you are at or what is going on, when God wants to move, He moves without any ones permission.

I'm in the same boat. It is very, very hard to change, especially how I was raised. However, I do not forget who the creator is and I PRAY a lot and ask God to forgive me and lead me in the right direction. I slip, but God catches me every time. It is impossible to be perfect.
