There are so many terrific looking cakes around for birthday's nowdays that it is difficult to answer this question without knowing the age. I have 6 kids ranging from late 20's to early teens and this is what I have learned from experience.
Under 10 - definitely birthday cake
10 -13 depending on the taste of the child either way.
13 and over I felt that the safest way is to ask the child what they would like.
Teenage- Adult - definitely cheesecake - and the rich and more fancier the better
Hope this is some help

A variety of cheese cakes! You can get a party platter that has 4 or 5 different kinds of cheese cake all put together like one cake. It's so good! Now I want some, thanks!

Personally, a chocolate swirl cheesecake with cherry topping but regular cakes tend to not be as thick and dense as a cheesecake so it might be better when there are a lot of people's tastebuds involved.

Depends on the audience...kids want regular cake, adults savour the richness of cheesecake more:P

if u cant decide, have a small one of both...the regular cake should be there moreso for tradition:)
