Yes. The USSR & its communist satellite countries in the Warsaw pact such as the then East Germany, Poland, Hungary, Czechoslovakia etc. were either directly or indirectly involved in the Vietnam war. They were either financial supporters, weapon suppliers, & military training providers & advisors for the NVA (North Vietnam Army).

The Cold War was on between the West, America and her Allis and the East, Russia and her Allis including China. President Johnson and Nixon, but Johnson in particular, were worried about China getting involved in the War on Vietnam's side. You can understand why Johnson would be worried because having a war with a Country next to China would be like the Russians invading and fighting Canada, right next door to us, and China is super vigilant about her borders and historical has been so.
The fact is, the East and West fought in many Countries during the Cold War, Cuba for example. And most of the time, Russian and American advisers and arms suppliers were behind the scene but with full knowledge of the other side.
The true story of the East ,West Cold War is a dark and nasty story about large and powerful Countries using smaller Countries and their people to do the killing, maiming and dying.
The disasters going on in Africa at this time started or were exacerbated by the Cold War and two giant and powerful countries.

During the summer of 1969 I engaged a MiG 21 over North Viet Nam. Got close enough one time to see that the pilot was a white man. I do believe you'd call that taking part.
