Some Christians think atheists are bitter(which is not true). Just like some alcoholics think sober people are bitter. Could it be because some Christians have to depend on god to be happy? Isn't that how drug and alcohol addicts are? Alcoholics think they have to depend on alcohol to function. Lots of Christians are the same way about god.

What would Jesus say?

I agree with you totally and there are some Christian's that are aware of the phenomenom of God Addiction. It is sad, especially in the bible belt US where evangelical Christian's need their weekly fix of praise and worship entertainment.

I come from an alcoholic family, and have been to a number of family programs with regard to alcoholism. In fact many of those programs are spiritual in nature and I became addicted to a particular meeting for 6 years.

So the answer is yes, I believe that God can be an addiction, but let's be clear. If the result in that addiction is a better human being and someone who truly becomes more selfless, caring, compassionate and helpful; then it is a healthy addiction (if there is such a thing) and I would encourage anyone to trade their substance, sex, work addictions for the spiritual addiction of your choice.

However, if you are mearly addicted to the people, the entertainment, the status within the church, or the feeling of superiority or judgement that sometimes comes to the selfrighteous Christian, then you are selfishly addicted; you are addicted to God or the Church to make YOU feel good. That is selfish, and it is no better than taking a drink to make you feel better.

True happiness is comes from the giving, not the receiving.

Good topic.

Yes, for some people...god is an obsession. Religious rituals become all consuming. At this level, it's probably more about "god" fearing than love for god.

Modern China considers god/religion as an opiate of the people, and the govt does everything to dissuade the population from worshipping. China mandates that people should care only about their community and the homeland. Ironically, China is probably the only place on earth where religious intolerance has never occurred among its people. After Indonesia, China has the 2nd most Muslims in the world.

Buddhism is the only world religion that has never promoted a war, or teach that other religions are wrong.

Well, some people are so weak minded, that they need the feeling of a god, a "big brother" always looking out for them and protecting their best interest. So in a way, it makes them feel better about themselves and would be addicting if your a weak minded person needing that kind of attention. So yes, god is like a drug.

I highly doubt that there can be a "God Rehab", I would love to see a God Believing person go to a "God Rehab" and admit they have a problem. God is worse than drugs. Philosophy is basically sneaking someone into "God Rehab" without them knowing.

Wow, from a psychology standpoint, you are touching on some possible behaviors that share commonality. I of course think that there is a total difference in the behavior of an alcoholic and a christian. Yet on the other hand, the gratification may have similar rewards. This could lead to your purported "denial of addiction" type of behavior. I would totally agree to funding a study of this. There is definite merit to a scientifically created theory on this. The behavior is possible, we just need the data to support it. Send this to all Psychology grad students and we'll find one of them that we will have piqued their interest! This is thesis material!!! (You may be treading on a gold mine for such a seemingly simple question)

I believe a lot of Atheists depend on Religion to remain happy as well. Without us religious people, you would have little to bash.

Religion is the opium of the masses. (Karl Marx)

God believers are just like any other drug addict. They are in denial, delusional and prone to violence against anyone who attempts to separate them from their drug.
