Depression is at least 95% internal. (In my opinion.) Things happening around you have very little to do with how you view your life. Your mom is wrong to say you should no longer be depressed. You are depressed because of something inside you, not outside you.

You have the power to overcome it, even if it requires medical treatment, but no one else can fix it for you, no matter how wonderful they are.

I suffer from depression also. I have episodes where I will be fine for a few months or so and then all of a sudden I am feeling depressed again. I know that when I was on meds I felt better most of the time.. obviously life is life and your not going to be happy all the time. I believe it is a chemical imbalance. I am 26 and I have had it for about 10 years or so on and off. Keeping a journal helps.. you can look back at the days before the onset of feeling so depressed and you may be able to start pinpointing what it is that makes you feel so down. Hope you feel better. Your not alone.

If you have just met the man of your dreams and yet you still find yourself feeling depressed and crying for no reason- then your depression is chronic and you may need medication indefinitely. Counseling or therapy may help. And support groups. Recovery, Inc. has some good tools you can learn to reduce the symptoms.

Most depression isn't chronic or in need of medication- it is situational. But yours does sound chronic- like it's a chemical imbalance that needs medication.

Don't get down on yourself for it, it's an illness when it's like yours. Just do what you need to do to be ok- take medication, see your doctor, rest and get enough sleep (very important), and make yourself do things that build endorphins (chemicals in the brain that come naturally when you exercise or do certain activities). See a therapist, learn the tools of Recovery, Inc or any similar cognitive therapy - you can be ok if you do these things.

I don't wish to sound harsh, but your mom is very misinformed about depression. Congrats on meeting the man of your dreams, so I really hate to tell you this....he may make you happy, as you should be when you are in love, but a new boyfriend can no way be a cure for what is an actual medical illness. Medication and/or pyschotherapy ('talk' therapy) are what is really going to help you. I really wish I could tell you it depression can just disappear and go away, but I am not a medical doctor or pyschiatrist. Good luck and be well.

Listen to monkey. Go to see a Doc. Better safe than sorry. Some depressions, depending what triggered them, go away. Others, like mine, stay for the long haul. If I had been diagnosed early on as a teenager maybe I still wouldn't be dealing with this illness today. I attempted suicide at age 16, I am now 43 and I am set to go into a mood and anxiety program in 3 days at a hospital for 8 weeks of therapy. This last bout of depression for me has finally gotten me the most help (as in therapies & docs').

Go here : http://www.moodsmag.com/selftest.htm

Take the test, and take your results to your Doc.

You don't want to be like me. Catch it early before it really gets ahold of you. Next thing you know you're in your 40's wondering where your life went. Oh Yeah, fighting depression!

Hon, it's unfortunate, but you'll probably always be prone to depression ... but that doesn't mean you always have to be depressed. I was clinically depressed for 7 horrid years until I was finally hospitalized. Now, I can recognize the signs of when I might be heading downward and know enough to head it off ... using good books, friends, positive affirmations, taking a drive, or just plain will power. It's easier said than done, I know, but you can ALWAYS find something positive in your life to hang onto in those desperate situations. Depression is from within .. it's a chemical imbalance. Don't make the mistake of depending on another person to be the "cure". You have to work on yourself... relentlessly! It's hard work. Best of luck! oh.. btw; do seek medical help. Drugs didn't work for me, but they may for you!

Without help from a mental health professional, you are not likely to overcome depression. After receiving help, the feelings of depression will go away, but I don't think the disease ever really goes away. When getting help, you will learn ways to deal with those days when you feel depressed and how to overcome them.

Clinical depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. It has nothing to do with whether you have good things or bad things happening in your life.
It is nothing to be embarrassed about and can easily be treated with the right medication... medication you are not on for the rest of your life. You might need to try a couple of different kinds to find the right one. Find a mental health practitioner and talk to them.

I was depressed when I was younger but now I have none.
Don't rely solely on your S.O. for your happiness.. make sure you eat well, avoid preservatives if possible, drink lots of water, and exercise a lot. Exercising releases endorphines which make you happier.
Also, no one should tell you when you should or should not be depressed. You can't help how you feel sometimes.

It relies upon. some anybody is depressed from a chemical imbalance in the mind ensuing in melancholy for this reason some docs recommend medicine. Others can get melancholy from a very tragic difficulty like (someone died and they trust it become their fault). In circumstances like this that reason melancholy it will be a way of wondering...and once that way of wondering or concept is modified then the fellow ought to be able to break free from melancholy. yet maximum in all probability once you've a chemical imbalance then your mind it will be with you all of your existence. i wish this allows
