You did not specify a grade level. You may want to consider a
project using a BASIC STAMP microcontroller, easily programmable in BASIC. Jan Axelson has written a book explaining how to program in 8052-BASIC. The EBay seller pha555 could answer questions & sell you the necessary (and inexpensive) parts.

well.I got an award for most played with machine in sixth grade. It was a home made Generator. Now I'm older and know a few of the mistakes. He'res what youll need for that.A plank of wood.that black looking tape,a light bulb,a wire, preferebly one that conducts electricity and some kind of spinning handle(like in those old cars for the window to roll down and up,and two fully powered batteries. Also, someone will need to help u assemble it.Remember, spining the handle quickly enough willmake the light bulb spark so make sure to use the tape on the wires near the light bulb.I could say how to do the rest but that would be cheating. To figure out the rest consult your science book.it should have a model of a generator.

I have been a judge to several state wide science fairs. One project was a product locator using a PDA - they a ton of this locator projects since bluetooth became affordable.

A project I recommend is how to heat a room (a small 10X10) during the winter using alternative energy - i.e. solar panels, wind, hand crank, etc... Take a lot of good notes, get a lot of help building and designing your circuits. Solar panels and rechargeable batteries and rechargeable battery kits are now affordable. You can combine solar panels with another alternative source, like hand cranking or small wind mill.

This project will guaranttee a prize every time.

They have books about 101 Science Fair projects.

Oh, I just remembered a good one I saw a few years ago...

It compared the cost and best cat litter. The kid had several cats, like 4 cats at his house and it is kinda expensive to keep more than one litter box going. He got first prize at the school level. I don't remember if he got more prizes after that.

I did pretty well on mine one year. I got a bunch of bean seeds and microwaved half of them. Then plant and wait.

Oddly enough, most of the microwaved beans didn't grow at all, but one grew to like twice the size of the unmicrowaved ones.
