Really it depends on the Dept. Most are hired or given a written intent to hire of you complete the academy. Most will not talk to you unless you complete the traning 1st. If you stated what city, state or dept. I could have given you a more clear answer.

You have gotten alot of bad answers, most have no idea what they are talking about.
First about 95 percent of the people who go to the police academy are already hired, and they are paid thier salary to go to the academy. They must pass of course of course to keep thier jobs. After they complete the academy they will go into field training.
Some departments actually have thier own academy and only thier hires can go.
In the other departments you can pay your way though the academy, normally you will have two or three job offers by the time you finish.
Of course remember like in GA, some departments pay 7 dollars a hour with no benifits, so it all depends on what level of police force you are willing to work for

It depends on the State. Some states hired you, and then send you to the academy. Some states require you to attend the academy first.

Typically, you don't enter police academies unless you are being sponsored by a Police Department. Good Luck.

Absolutely not. There's still a real competition to get hired as a police officer or fireman in most areas. In my region, I know people who have been waiting close to two years for a position. This may not be the same in your area and you may be able to walk into a position.

No, you still have to apply somewhere just like a regular job. You will be able to find something but it may not be where you want it.
