I think that all presents must be determined by the individual. The best presents are one that take alot of the thought and are individualized for that person. I am not talking about an engraved money clip. I am talking about something that is truly fit for the person. I also think it depends on the person recieving it if they will keep it "forever".
The one thing I love to get from my wife is hand written notes. In this day in age with communication as readily available to us there are much more convenient ways to express our thoughts and feeling. We often call each other on our cells during the workday or simply text each other on the cell perhaps with a little media file attached with animated hearts or happy faces. Often when I am on the internet, I might shoot off an email to her that I know she will get the next time she checks her inbox. The point is that these "express" ways of communication do not share the impact that a hand written letter or note may have.
I have to this date every letter, card or note that my wife has ever written to me. I probably always will. I am not sure if the present you had in mind could be as simple as that, but even if you decide to get a electronic gadget make sure you attach a nice hand written letter with it. Along with loving words make sure you put plenty of "girly" touches. Depending on how sentimental your guy is, the letter may outlast the gadget.

i strongly feel that the best romantic present for you to give a guy is a picture of yourself. A picture is always something that can be kept forever.

A picture of the both of you in a nice frame, a poem written by yourself, and I think a piece of jewelry would be nice. A nice ring, necklace, watch, something that he can show off. Well, that all I can think of! One.

A silver name braclet..they come in guys styles..get it engraved with his name on it....and on the back put something meaningful..like the name of your song....or something like that.

Jewelery..guys where it too. engraving makes it more personal.
Picture of yourself (and him too). engraving the frame could be even more sentimental.
