If you realize the way the mind works, you can often see how dejavu can happen. If you think it is significant, try this: describe exactly what is significant about it. Often it turns out to be something like several associated sensations that triggered an emtion. Example (this isn't real, but it is like other situations I've had before): I was sitting watching a movie eating Mike and Ike's candy. My brother passed me the popcorn, and all of the sudden, I knew I had done that before. Upon pondering, it turned out that, yes, I had done this before - vaguely. I was sitting on the same position on the couch with a similar blanket with the same static-cling remover smell, eating Mike and Ike's, getting grease on my fingers, and putting popcorn in my mouth.
Often, vague sensations in a situation can cause dejavu like that. It really only turns out to be, as you said, a mental coincidence.

I think this question is mis- categorized. Do we have a category for psychic phenomenon?
I've had deja vu moments and I've recently begun to wonder if they don't come from another dimension or spiritual plane. I'll have a dream and it will seem so real- and stay with me for some reason. Then sure enough - could be years later or just weeks- but I'll repeat that experience in real life.
It's never anything earth shattering- like earthquakes or volcanoes- nothing really traumatic. It will usually be something small and -other then the fact that I'd swear I'd been through the exact experience before- it would seem trivial.

First off, great question. I think about this often, and I didn't even think to ask it here. When I was a teenager, I would get deja vu on a somewhat frequent basis. It really hasn't happened in a while though. Anyway, I always had two theories. The first being...deja vu are the dreams coming back to you that you wake up and can't remember. For instance, you dreamt of that happening or doing that (whatever the deja vu was) if that makes any sense. It seems like I remember from psych class that you always dream when you are in REM, but you cannot always remember the dreams. Theory 2 was that is was something you had done in a past life.

I haven't really figured out how it could be significant to my life... but who knows.
I am still undecided about what the occassional Deja Vu means to me.
Good question, though. I am interested to see what others think!
