I have always used the correct terminology with my children. My five year old son knows he has a penis and my daughter knows she has a vagina.

WELL< I think that religious or NOT, parents should ALWAYS tell their children the proper names of their "private parts!"
Its a proven fact that if ANY child grows up calling their private areas "pee-pees" or whatever else, it will be alot harder for them to talk about their penis' or vaginas as adults because they will think it is embarrasing to say, or they are ashamed, I do not understand WHY it is so hard for some people to say the word PENIS or VAGINA., its not like its a swear word or something like that, The BIBLe as far as I know, doesnt put shame to these words so why is it soo hard for u to teach them? If u were a GOOD parent u would already know this is NOT a bad thing to teach! They are just words and u better start telling them about SEX soon too bcuz I have 5 children and believe me they will learn in school , catholic or public, it doesnt matter!! Better to tell them and teach them urself than find out for themselves the wrong way. Also if for some GOD forbid reason they were to be molested or "touched" by a pervert, I can almost promise u that they will be afraid to tell u becuz ur teaching them that they are to be sacred about these parts ! For cryin' outloud, "PEE-PEE is something u do, NOT somethin' u have! Talk to ANY Doctor they will tell u the same thing! Good luck

Why tell them they are called pee-pees to begin with? Use proper terminoligy. Penis is not a bad word for a child to know. It's no worse than a kid saying pee-pee.

Haha, my folks said "penis" from the get-go. They just didn't mention the procreation part of its function until I was a young teenager (somewhere around 12 or 13, I think). Before then, I guess I just figured that it was a handy way to pee standing up.
Sorry, that was probably WAAAAY too much information, but you DID ask. :p

what does religion have to do with that? Do your children have alternate names for any other body parts like fingers, toes, arms legs, nose mouth, etc..? Why should a penis or vagina be any different?
children who are comfortable with their bodies and are not taught to be ashamed grow up to have better self esteem and healthier relationships.

The moment they discover it. Tell them the truth. Telling them anything else will give them the impression that somethings different with them; especially if you change the name of apart of them later on down the road. At the same time you teach them how private. God made it. And God said after He made everything, it was good. That includes everything about male and female. Teach them the truth from the beginning.

I never used cutesy names for penis and vagina. Seemed like a stupid thing to do. So, my kids always knew the real names.

Tell them when they understand English. God didn't tell us to hide the truth from our kids. A 3 year old can say penis just as easily as peepee. This is purely a matter of adults being uncomfortable.
