After my register was counted tonight , it came up almost 100 short. One employee worked from morning till I got there in the late afternoon. Usually the first person signs on and it stays that way the whole day so the cash is only collected and stuff once a day. I am very careful at the register and don't really use because I am not a regular cashier but use one in my department several times a day.
I usually deal with very small amounts of cash as most of the high price stuff is in the other departments. Most of my cash transacations are 2 or 3 dollars for copies and stuff. The largest cash transaction I delt with today was about 40 dollars and I know I gave correct change. I know I didn't do anythign to cause a shortage but I feel like I will be blamed because I am the new person and the manager is always picking on my anyway and sometimes blames me for stuff that I really couldn't have prevented do to lack of communication. Does anyone else have false guilt?

Except for this incident I had a pretty good night. Maybe checked out 20 people at the most and most had credit cards or were spending 2 dollars

Don't worry, it's perfectly normal to feel this way for a conscientious person.
I've worked as and managed cashiers forever and I think that what you are talking about, may just be an accounting error and when the math is done correctly, it will work out! If not, the other person is at fault as well!
You should try to protect yourself, and your job, and try to convince your boss to let you count the money before you start AND then you should be the only one to handle the money, so you can be sure of how accurate you are.
With the size of transactions you are talking about, it is very hard to be that short unless someone took the money out of the till!
My bet is on human mathematical error.
GOOD LUCK!!!

No, cash sortages happen to everyone. Usually not as high as that, but they can't pin it on you. If they do they'll ask you questions like...are you haveing financial problems at home ect...that is none of there business and you stand your ground. And hey, if i were you...you next job maybe don't work w/ cash or people. I found a nice paying job where I do neither and I get alot of down time. Its like mail room entry level, no experience.
You might get in trouble b/c they'll look for someone to blame it on even though its managments fault for letting soo many ppl have acces to the register, and if you get a chance to stand up and defend yourself then do it.
Your probably still pretty young, this won't haunt you the rest of your life. But next time shoot for a job where your boss isn't under constant pressure to meet quotas b/c they'll be asses no matter who they are.

I agree with everyone here, this isnt guilty feeling, it is you being scared. What you need to do is speak with the manager before he comes to you and with an assistant manager there as well. Then let them know, you know your drawer was almost 100 short and let them know when exactly you came on the register. If anyone else was on the register, they need to be in the meeting as well because you dont want to accuse anyone behind their back. You want to put everything out on the table.. by speaking to them first, that lets them know you are not guilty.. why would a guilty person come forward??.. you ask them what it is that you could do to aleviate any problems they have with you or what happened.. but by all means, do not pay the 100 back as that would make you look guilty.. that is why they have insurance, to cover losses-albeit material losses.

I am sure it is very natural to feel worried in your situation, but try not to be. They should have a record of things and be able to find out the truth, and even if you get blamed: tell them the honest truth, and that's all you can do. Your worrying will only cause you to feel upset and unhappy, and may even make you physically ill; I've dealt with anxiety most of my life and have learned it is often good for nothing: it can't help you when the situation is out of your control, which it is, so don't stress about it. Think about something else or you'll feel worse and worse, because anxiety is very perpetual.

What it is is that you are afraid of being accused and it is hard to defend yourself in a situation like that. You are dreading a confrontation that could get nasty. Keep reminding yourself that you are innocent and did nothing to be ashamed of.

That's not guilt. That's fear that you're going to be falsely accused or punished.
