Many reasons. They could be in a transition in life: New city, inbetween jobs, lonely, just lost a loved one, just broke up with someone. People are often lied to at first before they get in the group. They get people to attend meetings under false pretenses. The cult leaders put phobias against quitting in peoples minds. Cults can provide an instant family and social approval for people. If you really want to read more on this I would urge you to read combatting cult mind control by Stephen Hassan. For a lot of reasons. An interesting saying about this is that people don't join cults, cults recruit people. Cults are very adapt at recruiting people. They make all of it sound wonderful. Then when they are hooked suddenly they have a lot of instant friends and are made to feel welcome. They are treated more like family than an acquaintance which is desirable to many people, especially lonely ones and those who really have no family or their families don't leave nearby. As a rule, most cults use various brainwashing techniques to keep them in once they join.

Cunning is the description of the serpent in Genesis and that's just the same way cults start.
"My people are destroyed for a lack of knowledge". Also Peter speaks about these characteristics. " They will fool even the elect."
