Why do people hit new packs of cigarettes on their hands before opening them?

I understand why you would want to "snap" chew because it has fiberglass in it, so you would need to mix it up.

its known as packing the ciggs. What you are doing is punching the pack of ciggeretes thus pushing the tobacco down into he cig so take out the pockets of air traped between the cig. Once you minimise the pockets of air your cigereate becomes noticeably smoother to smoke

Because they think it packs the tobacco or something. Mostly because they've seen others do that and - being sheep - do it also.....I smoked a long time and never once did I feel the need to to that... .. It doesn't give the cigarette a better taste. How ignorant can you get? Most of the time - the tobacco was already packed too tight to begin with!

You "pack" them before you open the pack of cigarettes.
This is just a way to get all of the tobacco into the cigarette, so when you smoke it, it will last longer, instead, of having loose paper at the end of your cigarette.

They think it's cool and makes them look like a seasoned smoker. Plus it makes the tobacco pack tighter for more smoke in their lungs per hit.
