Dogs have ten times the smell abilities of humans. And because they can't really communicate with one another like we can, they sniff everything to see if a dog has left their mark there, and also sniff everyone's butts to see where they've been, etc.

Because. Dogs have poor vision, therefore they get a lot of their information from sound and smell. They sniff butts because there are the most scents of hormones in this area. I bet a dog might ask why humans are always looking around, because their eyes are about as useful as our noses.

A few hit it on the head as far as identity, it is also an assist so they can decide if you are friend or foe and, breading purposes, just like when you smell your lover and you get aroused or, when guys go into a locker room that has been used allot, they start to become aggressive due to pheromones in the air, you can not smell them but your body reacts when they are present.

they have extremely sensitive noses so they use their keen sense to "familiarize" with other people and things. if u don't like it when they sniff u, then get a small dog, they can't reach. :-)

Most animals have scent glands on either side of their anus. These scent glands are identifiers. Generally speaking, when the animal defecates, the scent glands empty.
So a dog is just trying to identify you.
