they put many things to keep their hair up, and they use things like wax to keep it the way they want. when they go to sleep they have to sleep with this wooden thing holding up their neck so theyre hairstyle doesnt get ruined. but now, most geishas use wigs because they are much easier to wear then doing your hair, which takes hours. hope i asnwered your question!

I saw it done on tv the other night. A hairdresser did all the girls. He had it pulled so tight with a string that it made a permanent bald spot. Over the bald place he put a band of hair. The girls said it was painful and they had to lay their heads or necks on a block to sleep at night. I felt sorry for them.
