There is no software that can change what the hardware is capable of doing. This is because the components inside the drives are different. This is just like asking can a software make my 266mHz CPU into a 3.6gHz one or turning a 1GB HD into a 250GB. Sorry, just cant be done.

No. The CD drive is read-only. The CD burner is write-enabled.

on the box your computer comes in it will tell you there// if the "TRAYS" are for reading or writing or both(THEN THE SOFTWARE YOU SELECT TO USE DOES THE BURNING)
like for instance i have a computer with one tray and it is a (cd-writer/dvd-rom combo) tray
this means i can burn cd's with it and
READ only dvd discs(ROM)
LOOK FOR(ROM - this means read only) (DVD-RW - means read & write)(CD-RW - means read & write)
and that will mean you can burn dvd's//cd's with that "tray"
now about the software part (this can be very confusing)
because i have NERO 6 ULTRA/// AND NERO 7 ULTRA
i also have roxio 7 easy cd & dvd creator(came with my external plextor burner)(I DO NOT RECCOMEND USING BOTH NERO & ROXIO ON THE SAME COMPUTER AT THE SAME TIME/// YOU WILL HAVE PROBLEMS BIGTIME!!!!)
now with nero 6 ultra/ i could not make dvd's on dual layer discs // so that is my reason for buying nero 7 ultra// then i discovered i could burn everything with roxio 7 BUT HERE IS THE CATCH!!!!
roxio is not as flexable as far as space (it creates a very high quality dvd// but uses disc space very fast)(hence, it is a completly uncompressed format) NERO is the software you should consider for your cd//dvd burning) but it is a very good thing to have roxio as well (i have had certain files fail on me with nero // and tried roxio on these same files and was successfull)so now the question is what can you afford to do ?
i think you can get nero 7 ultra for around 80 bucks maybe less
i suggest you buy the external cd/dvd burner plextor px716uf model(cost me about $230.00)must be cheaper by now, this was over a year ago now. or ask your dealer whatever is even better than that if anything? that is where i got my roxio 7 easy cd & dvd creator software but if you allready got a dvd burner "TRAY" then definetly get nero 7 ultra burning SOFTWARE

The drive must be capable of burning CDs. No software can make it do that if it doesn't do that. But you might also need software to help you burn CDs (e.g. Nero).

Not So far, If you have the Hardware i.e. a CD Writer then you have multiple Softwares to use.
