how to change the belt on a kirby vacuum cleaner?

I have an older , I mean really older Kirby, and on mine on the top of the vacuum head is a latch, flip it open and take the head off. Put the new belt over the roller and put the head back on. That same latch you flipped, flip it again and it will catch the belt and slide it into place. Took me several attempts to do this.
