The county of Wiltshire holds some great ancient monuments to explore including Avebury, Stonehenge, numerous white horses. Cornwall is also full of amazing countryside and dramatic coastline.
Around England, there are many wonderful towns & cities to visit. Bath is a lovely city, but full of tourists during the summer. Same for Stratford-on-Avon.
Up north, Chester is a great historic city, not too far from Liverpool (which has lots of attractions including the Beatles museum).
Which ever region you travel to in England, you'll find a good variety of towns and countryside to check out.

Explore Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset. Yes Stonehenge is Wiltshire, but these other places are interesting -- Salisbury, Old Sarum, Dorchester, Maiden Castle, Corfe Castle, Bill of Portland, Shaftsbury, Winchester, Lulworth Cove. Drive around great scenery, moors, old villages, seacoast . Bound to be some tourists but not as many as in London. This Thomas Hardy Country. I hope you know who he is or you aren't really anglophile.

Small towns are often the best and less crowded.Try searching for Lincoln,York,Chester Oxford and Shrewsbury. They often have stately homes or gardens nearby. Also Snowdonia in wales and the malvern hills or peak district iin Derbyshire and the lake district.
London is always too crowded. The most tourists I ever saw in one place was at Warwick castle.
