Best place to get a dog...puppy or adult...is your local animal shelter. They really do know you're saving them and will pay you back with love ten-fold.

Well, it looks as though everyone has an opinion on what type of dog makes a great pet.
I've owned several breeds including Labs, Golden Retrievers, Lahso(spelling?), the "taco" dog, and they've all been great pets and companions. As of now, I own three Boxers. Boxers are wonderful family dogs, very playful and love to clown around. They aren't a small breed, I'd say more in the medium sized area.
Boxers maintain a puppy-like enthusiasm thats hard to resist. But it can also get them in trouble, as puppies tend to do. Check out www.boxerworld.com to get more info on this special breed. Good luck in your search for your perfect puppy!

Go to dog shows and speak with the breeders there. Also get opinions from handlers not only about the traits, characteristics, and likely genetic defects of the breed they are showing but get their opinion about other breeds you may be interested in. Go to parks where people walk their dogs and ask lots of questions. Questions are the answers Lots of info on the web. Take your time and your decision will be the correct one.

I recommend a Maltipoo which is a Toy Poodle Maltese mix. So it's like having TWO dogs! hahaha. That way you have a unique dog, not one that EVERYBODY has. I don't recommend the "taco bell dog" because they tend to bark and are kind of mean and intesnse. Maltese and Toy Poodles are calmerd but yet VERY VERY playful and cute. Trust me. But the one thing to watch out w/ Maltipoos are that you can spoil them EASILY! They will whine and whine ecause they know they are so cute it'll work!

I have a Yellow Labrador and he's perfect....he loves my little 2 year old daughter, he protects her. He's fun and he's smart...so he learned tricks and commands very easily. I recommend a Lab....you can choose the color. We've always had Yellow and Brown Labs. Great family dogs. Read up on them first though. There are Lab Rescue centers all over the US, so if you decide to get one, maybe you could adopt one that needs a good home.

just remember they are all playful and cute when they are puppies but they do grow up, having a pet is a long expensive commitment think about it long and hard first but my recommended breed would be a labrador they are gentle, easy to train and low maintainance not to mention loyal and protective and great with kids.

Pug is the best toy dog ever.. its not really that big. i should know because i own a pug. he is very sweet and seldom barks, so you can sleep with him on bed because he is well behave and according to some, when you own a pug, it feels like you have another family member.. you should get a pug, u wont ever get wrong. they are known for being sweet and cuddly and they dont bite..

bichons are very nice little dogs with lovely personalities... I don't have one, but I work at a vet clinic and really like all the bichons that come in.

I love Chihuahuas and GSD.

It really depends on your requirements. www.puppyfind.com has a questionaire that you can fill out and it will list all the breeds that fit your wants.
