Since cost is of concern to you, I recommend any of the Canon Digital SLR's except the ones that use EF-S lens. The smaller lens is not compatible with the other Canon dSLR cameras. I would not invest in these lenses because of this. In the future full size sensors will become more common and less costly and if you buy into the smaller "Digital" lens camp you will be stuck with a lens that will be worthless in the future. You can get High Quality cheap Canon EF lenses everywhere. You can find 3rd party lenses for Canon even cheaper. Many are as good or better than the ones from Canon for less money. I own the Canon 35mm film and digital cameras, all share the same Auto Focus lenses.

Invest in the best glass you can afford. dSLR bodies will become commodities in the future. Glass will be the biggest factor in the quality of your images and the keep their inheirant value long past the body. Sell you older lenses and upgrade when you can. If you buy Canon dSLR you have a product with a future instead of a dead end like P&S or the Prosumer fixed lens SLR-like cameras.

Canon Digital Rebel XT, in Europe its called the 350D. Good DSLR w/ lots of features, most test either rate it best of that price range or a close second, comes w/ an 18-55mm lens that work ok, just not great. Recently I bought a 100-300mm lens. The pluses of this camera is that it can use every lens that Canon has ever put out... and thats a lot of lenses. Good focusing, great resolution, can capture in RAW (CR2) or JPEG formats, multiple modes, histogram, custom white balancing, and B&W as well as anything else you'd really need to play with on the camera

im torn between canon's rebelxt and olympus' evolt e500. I love the 2.5" lcd, and the dust reduction features on the evolt, but im dissapointed at the amount of accesories available through olympus, compared to the countless lenses and compatibility of the rebelxt.

With both cameras averaging a consumer price of 799, the olympus does come with two lenses... I believe a 14-45 and a 40-150...while the rebelxt only comes with the 18-55.

Im waiting for canon's next consumer entry slr since the rebelxt has been out for a while now, in hopes that it will outdo both the rebelxt and the e500. Olympus has already come out with their next consumer model, the e330 with the new live view screen in which you can actually use the screen to frame your pictures, however this feature slows the camera down a lot. something not very highly appreciated in the slr world.

My suggestion is to wait for the rebelxt's succesor.
