first we must STOP subisidizing fossil fuels so much with our income taxes, raising the cost of oil and natural gas dramatically, pushing the economics of developing things like hydrogen powered aircraft into the realm of possibility. the first step is to STOP subsidizing gasoline. to do this, we need to raise the gas tax about $5.00-10.00 per gallon. that sounds outrageous, but that is how much it is subsidized, you just dont realize it because it comes out of our income taxes. i am serious.

Jet fuel is kerosene, which is a long-chain hydrocarbon. It is used both because its high ignition temperature makes it safer and more compatible with jet engines and also because it has a high energy to volume ratio.

Hydrogen is not a very good fuel for aircraft because it has a low energy to volume ratio. To power an aircraft, much more of the aircraft would have to be dedicated to fuel tanks and less room would be left for passengers and cargo, which actually is not very efficient. A better renewable fuel for aircraft might be bio-diesel or maybe we could make bio-kerosene.

By the way there are some aircraft that use hydrogen ... rockets. In that case the high energy to weight ratio is the over-riding factor and nobody minds using 95% of the volume of the rocket to store the fuel.

You can make hydrogen and oxygen by putting two PCs of metal in a bottle of water a little Drano and a few amps at low voltage. you will see the bubbles start. You can put a divider between the pos and the neg to not mix the hydrogen and oxygen. This has been around for over 100 years. Navy Sub's use this to make air for breathing while staying under the sea for months at a time. Doing this and then burning the mix together or using in a fuel cell makes clean water for drinking. So they use salt water and human waste. Works great. You can make it and run your car or lawn mower on it at home. Do a yaho search and you will find it every where.. Search water car and you can learn how to do it yourself.

Now that you know it is so easy to do why are we not using it? Easy, The big money boys can't find a way to make any money from it. That is why they are making fuel cells so you have to buy the high grade hydrogen.

For aircraft, they simply pump hydrogen into the balloons, with communities, they put a smaller form of hydrogen, into balloons,at Ballparks, Disneyland, Fairgrounds, through hydorolic pumps, plugged into walls, etc... The zepplin, Good year, are examples, and smaller community versions, are the balloons people bring to the hospitols, when someone's just had a baby,etc..and so on... energy consumption, maybe electricity power bills, would be the only barrier..

First a hydrogen powered engine that is light-weight and economically feasible must be developed. For it to be economically feasible, the price of fuel must rise even higher. In case you didn't know, the way they currently extract Hydrogen is by using fossil fuels. Water would be a better source of power, but the stigma that comes with that thinking is still prevalent.

Currently we are developing the hydrogen fuel technology and within 10 years it will be perfected enough to make it affordable to operate aircraft as well as motor vehicles.

First, we have to come up with an economical way to make hydrogen not based on fossil fuel. And we have to come up with better technology for aircraft engines to utilize hydrogen efficiently.
