Many factors can cause a student to drop out. Psychological or physical problems, family situations, and some people just aren't cut out to be students, and I personally think if someone can do better outside of school, they should not be forced to go back. I don't mean that some kid who is sick of homework should drop out, but some people do better on vocational tracks.
As far as stress goes, that is a viable reason. The stress that students in all levels have is too great, and can lead to psychological breakdowns. Most of the times if someone drops out for this reason, they end up going back.

Some people have a hard time conforming to the traditional school system. Then there are those who come from dysfunctional abusive homes and have a hard time concentrating on the school work. There are the smart asses who think they know it all already so they quit (only to find out later they really don't know it all). I managed to graduate with honors from high school but I found the system to be more of a form of socialized daycare. I always thought it was sad that after 12 years in public school, you don't come out with any real job or life skills. I would like to see high school offer more vocational training instead of 4 more years of English class. Not everyone can afford to go to college and some don't want to go so why not offer a vocational curriculum so that kids have a bankable skill by graduation time?

No, it isn't stress, it is depression... When you really don't give a s*** about anything... It cannot be explained unless you've been depressed before...
