"Marriage" is currently a combination of civil and religious contracts. Would it make more sense to separate these such that governments only authorize civil unions (between any two consenting adults), and religions can handle "marriage" however they like?

Government sponsored civil unions define certain legal responsibilities and rights, such as inheritance. Confusing this with the moral issues of a religious marriage seems like a problem.

My suggestion is that the government get out of the "marriage" business altogether. If you want to have a legal civil union, it would be called a "civil union," whether you're hetereo or gay. If you want to get "married," it would be up to the religion (or marriage-granting) institution of your choice.

I agree with you, so that would allow gays to marry, because why should they not, two people in love.

Gays won't tolerate the term 'civil union'. It has been offered to them in several places and rejected. Their aim is not to achieve parity with heteros in a legal sense. It is to normalize their lifestyle in the eyes of society. They feel that calling them anything but married implies an inferior union. It's the separate but equal argument.

I was married by a notary with no religious involvement, yet, my union would still be called a marriage while theirs would not. That is the crux of their opposition.

I like it. A holy union is just that a covenant with God regarding you care for an other person. A civil union is a partnership contract incorporating the assets of two individuals.

maybe governments should stop issuing civil unions. what's the use of doing so? religious folks get married because they think God has ordained it. why do non-religious folks want to have a civil union?

maybe so.
because no matter what, two people of the same sex can never truly be united in marriage in God's eyes.
That is not anger or hate, that's the truth.
You can't call that holy or sanctified or whatever.
Your idea makes more sense than most peoples do.
