I know absinthe is illegal because the plant that makes it crazy and fun is illegal. Someone told me recently that although it is illegal to sell in the US, you can buy it in another country or buy it online from another country and then get it shipped legally, or take it yourself legally, into the country. I am interested in trying this drink, but I suspect my friend is wrong, and that someone told her it was legal to bring in so she wouldn't get all upset about doing an illegal drug. It's not legal to bring any other restricted substance into the US, why would absinthe be an exception?

Can you indeed legally bring absinthe into the US? If not legally, what do you think the chances of getting caught are if someone (not me, of course, I wouldn't DO this) bring it into the US, either by shipping from an online source or bringing it in luggage? Does anyone know where someone could get absinthe, either way?

The guy in New Orleans is making a type of absinthe legally by using a close relative of the illegal wormwood that is legal. It doesn't have the same effects, thanks for answering though.

It is illegal because of the chemical thujone. Modern commercially produced absinthe has been shown to contain a safe level of thujone.

In order to comply with European Union (EU) limits, the thujone levels in commercially distilled absinthe must be10mg/l or less. The thujone levels in commercially distilled absinthe in Germany must be 30mg/l or less.

Absinthe is a "prohibited" item and is subject to being seized by the United States Customs. So, no, it cannot legally be brought into the United States.

It is currently being commercially produced in Switzerland

Don't believe any U.S. business that says it has real absinthe, it is illegal, otherwise New Orleans Absinthe House would have had it's fountain flowing when Katrina hit. Try this place, but beware I think it need to come from France or Czech Republic,

I saw a magazine article about a guy in New Orleans who's making absinthe. Apparently the law has changed... good luck.

I know that it can't be sold in the US, but I think that you can get it on-line. But it's gonna cost you. It's gonna cost you a lot. I haven't seen a bottle for under $150, and it only gets higher with the better names.

It's illegal to buy in the US. Next time, could you make your question details a little longer? Thanks.
