Back in the day, you were trained to knock on the bathroom door to see if anyone was in there. This is what parents use to do. You were also trained to answer if you were in there and there was a knock. Now adays parents seldom train their children to do this,so that said is the reason you lock the door when in the bathroom. Otherwise things could get pretty embaressing.

I think its the added feeling of security and privacy from the outside world... even if its mostly an imagined barrier.

For most people, somebody knowing or seeing them use the restroom is extremely embarressing, so for our peace of minds, we take extra precautions to make sure the incident won't occur.

Because we can't get over ourselves, and the importance of the "differences" between the sexes. Not to mention no matter what you lock, does it really separate anything at all, or does it just make one feel comfortable?

Ultimately, there is no justifiable reason, its just a socially agreed upon phenomena

Well if you lock the door, which I hope you do, its for the same reason...to keep people from coming in and seeing you use the toilet.

I would have thought to answer WHY DO SOME PEOPLE NOT LOCK THE DOOR....

this is not a question...you must have been taught by your MOM why. I am sorry for you.

I don't. In fact I never even shut the door!!! The people I work with don't really appreciate it, but like I always say "we're family here, right?"

its part of what their mommy taught them to do when using the potty - saves embarassment on the person inside and out - also if you have items with you this may prevent them from being stolen - never hang anything up in a bathroom - if someone snatches it would you really run after them with your pants down

most people want privacy. Someone can barge in while you are seated on the toilet straining or bent over wiping. This can be very embarrasing

Well if their like me they have learned this behavior from having kids come running in on you...... or a husband looking for something unimportant ..or one your kids friends needing to go .
after a few of these episodes it becomes second nature.
