i currently have a dell desktop that is a few years old. it came preloaded with windows xp home version. the problem is that i recently bought an mp3 player and it says that it requires windows windows service pack 1 or2. do i need really need to update my software and how do i do it? will it cost me any money?

It won't cost anything. And yes, you should absolutely do it. Many programs don't work without SP2. I'll find the link.

If your computer is not automatically updating your windows then go to www.microsoft.com and get the updates. And yes you do need these updates so that your computer can be protected for security threats. Good Luck and yes it is Free.

I have it stored on my computer, so i recommend it. It also comes with a firewall. If you have Dial-Up, it will take about half a day, it did mine when i use to have an older computer. Lucky for me, the new computer we bought already came with SP2 built in, so i didn't have to wait that long for it to finish downloading.

You definitely need it, as many noted it has added firewalls, security center notices, and many features. The main reason you need it, is because you won't receive any other updates, including security patches that have preventive measures against viruses and worms. Essentially you will continue to get more and more vulnerable if you do not.

SP2 ..has lot of fixes. If you dont have SP2, you wont be able to install newer updates from MS
