Primarily a religion started by Anton Sanders LaVey (LeVey) some years ago as a counter to Christianity. Prior to that a reaction to the midieval Roman Catholic Church -- prior to that nothing, because Satan as the Adversary was G-d's advesary in Judaism, not mans. Overall--- another take on an old myth.

Anton laVey said pure satanism,, is the worship of mans highest nature,, and the expression of and fulfilment of that,, is satanism ,,ego to the 10th power ,,and the total religion of self ,, he preached ,,no God ,No devil ,just people doing what was natural ,,in other words the life of a person should be an ego trip ,,the satanic rituals were to snag converts from other religions to use as pawns in sex acts and as servants in S+M ,,, he put on shows of catholic services and latin in reverse as part of the scamming of the unwary ,,, real evil devil worship involves demonology ,,and sacrifices ,,and real belief in satan as a force on the planet ,,, an olde dude whos read books

Worship of Satan basically. It can get really technical considering it is highly influenced (Satanists do the opposite of I mean by this) of many things the media does/reports by being anti-"Forgiving God" and instead beleiving in a Higher Being that condemned the human race to Death in this universe.
