Play games, chat, have your dog play with someone elses dog, and some other things. You should get it. It's worth the money.

I have one, and I LOVE it. Here are some of the games and features.
Features:
Two 3 in. LCD screens:
This makes games a lot easier. For example, in Super Mario 64 DS, the map is on the bottom screen and all the action is on the top.
Touch Screen:
The bottom screen is touch sensitive. In ganes like Nintendogs, you can use it to pet your dog, play with it, and a bunch of other stuff. In FPS's, you can use it for very presise aiming. In games like Mario, you can use it to guide your character. The possibiltys are endless, and it's one of the funnest features in the system.
Microphone: The mic is a small hole at the bottom of the DS, (or in the middle on the DS Lite) You can use it for voice recignition in games like Nintendogs, and like the touch screen, it is a lot of fun to play around with.
GBA compadibillity:
The slot on the bottom of the DS is used to play GBA games. However, it is not compadible with previous game boy color games, etc.
Online and wireless Maltiplayer:
With some DS games, you can have maltiplayer matces with other DS owners. In some cases, using DS download play, you only need one game card for up to 16 of your friends. (Check the back of DS game case for more info) The wireless range is about 30-60 feet.
There is also an online feature. It's free, and all you need is a broadband connection, and a wireless router. If you don't have a router, you can also use a buy a Wi-Fi USB adapter for about $39.99 USD
One more option is to find a Hotspot near you. A hotspot (You would find them at places like McDonalds,) is a place were you can connect to the Nintendo Wi-Fi connection for free. I'm not quite sure how this works, so I'd try going to www.nintendo.com for more info.
Pictochat:
Pictochat is a free chat program that comes with every DS. You and up to 15 friends can chat in four chat rooms. Use the touch screen to send pictures, or tap letters on the keyboard to form words. This is a fun feature, but the wireless range is only about 30-60 feet.
Those are the features. As for games, these are some that I really like.
Animal Crossing: Wild World
Super Mario 64 DS
The New Super Mario Bros.
Nintendogs
WarioWare:Touched!
Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day!
Metriod Prime:Hunters
And a lot more! Nintendo DS games ussually cost $20.00-$34.99. There are a lot of games, but my favorite would have to be Nintendogs. Hope this helps!

I absolutely love my DS and I am always playing it in the lunch room at work. When people see the stylus they always ask me if it's some kind of crazy PDA/phone.
As for the menus, you have the option to have the system boot up to the main menu (choose between the ds game in the slot, pictochat, download play, launch GBA game, or do settings like set the alarm clock, enter your info, etc) OR, just boot directly to the DS game in the slot if there is one.
It's a really flexible, fun and innovative system and I'm sure you'll love it.
