There not that smart. Children dont recognize themselves for awhile. It depends your IQ. My psychology teacher asked us when did we discover ouselfs. Meaning when did you realize you were u. That's when you begin to notice YOU in the mirror and pictures. Dogs never realize this.

Whenever we move to a new house, if there are full length mirrors in there, mine will stop and do a double take, and then look embarrassed (at being fooled into thinking it's another dog?) and move on - it's really quite funny!! I've tried talking to them via the mirror and holding their heads to look at themselves, but they can't wait to get away!!! I used a mirror to check the 'stack' (in my showing days), so those ones used to get used to a mirror and basically took absolutely no notice of them

dogs cant make out things in 2D. they see things in 3D only. they can see shadows, which is likely that is what they see through the mirror, but they cant see anything happening on TV.

lets say ur dog has spots on it's face its reversed in the mirror so it doesn't recognize it's self

Dogs rely on their sense of smell. Perhaps because they cannot smell the "other" dog they are nervous or upset.
