He wants me to look for one I like with him, but I'm not sure what to look for. I real stone would be nice, but must it be a diamond? Can I get silver, or is only gold acceptable? How expensive is too expensive to ask for (we are both in college... money is an issue)? Should I get him one too, or is that weird? I want to have something nice, but I want a surprise too. How should I go about showing him what I like but not asking for anything in particular?

I'm actually going this week to look at rings with my boyfriend, although I don't expect a proposal for another couple of months - its a big deal to him to surprise me, but he wants to be sure he gets a ring that I like, since I'll be wearing it for the rest of my life. I'm not picking out the exact one (I want an antique Edwardian or art deco style ring, so he'll have to catch an estate jeweler at the right time to find that), but just showing him what styles I like and more importantly DON'T like - like I don't like yellow gold, I don't like round diamonds, and I don't like pave settings. As far as cost, stone quality, etc., that's something that he has to handle when it's time to actually buy the ring - this way, I know I'm getting something that I'll love, but he still gets to surprise me with both the proposal and the ring, which makes both of us happy!!

The ring can be gold, silver, platnum and can hold whatever type of stone you wish. Diamonds are traditional, but if you prefer sapphires then look for something with a combination.

Perhaps you can decide which store and then establish a relationship with a sales person you like. You go in first and select 2 or 3 (or 4) rings you like and would be happy with. Then have him go in alone later and have the sales person show him the ones you selected. He can pick out the one he likes best and there is still some element of surprise.

He probably wants to find out what you like, as well as to what you are expecting in the way of size and style.

Go with him and show him a few that you like. I have white gold for mine, and that is fine. They make all sorts of rings - not just gold. But look at what you like. Now days, they make diamond, diamond with other gems, or even cubic zirconia engagement rings. It's going to be what is in your price range and what you like.

As for the money thing, it is what the ring means, not the size of the rock. Besides, after you are married, and making your "millions", you can upgrade.

there are no requirements when choosing your ring. my friend and her husband both got silver bands with some celtic inscription about love on them. whatever u like. there's also whit gold, which looks just like silver. the size or type of stone u get is up to you. i personally don't like big diamonds. i've seen beautiful rings on websites like zales.com with precious stones for accents. u can design it however u want. if u want him to pick it out for u, i would go online with him, look at rings on some sites and show him what u like, but more importantly, what u dont like.

it's really up to you...pick whatever you want...what ever stone....whatever metal...you'll be wearing it for awhile. you should like it!

my husband surprised me with mine, but a friend and her husband went together looking for one...she showed him a bunch that she liked...the jewlery store even let them write the list down and then he went back later and picked the one he wanted for her, and he could afford. She was good about picking reasonable ones...nothing big and over fancy....

congratulations!
