I own a 1999 and a 2003 Passat. Both have been very reliable.I have sold VW for 6 years. Most of our problems with reliability have been due to problems with contractors that have built componets for us.Power window regulators are an example. The contractor failed VW,and all though all defective windows were repaired at no cost to the customer(even if the factory warrenty was out),it did require trips to the service dept.We had "coil pack",problems with the 1.8T engines that were due to BOSCH (the manf.).Now BOSCH makes electrical components for many auto makers, but VW had to have them replace countless coil packs.JD Power, Consumer Reports, and other similar consumer reporting companys give info that dose not always provide all the facts of a reliability issue.I have sold hundreds of VW's,both new and used.We buld a safe, reliable, and fun car to drive.Sometimes we go a little overboard with enginering, but the cars are reliable.More today than ever before.vwjcook@yahoo.com

I don't know about Jettas, but we just got rid of a 99 bug with 85,000 miles on it and had no major problems with it. The biggest thing I had to do was replace an O2 sensor.

Yes. 99-02 were turbulent years for vw. Much improved now. Try it! Youll like it!

It's give or take. You can get one thats basically a lemon or one that wont give you a single problem. Mine hasn't given me a single problem ever (2004 Jetta GLI) and I love it. Very reliable in my opinion. I also have gotten 37 mpg on my Jetta, and it's turbo.

The most definitive answer from that would be if you checked Consumer Reports. But, the general impression is that VWs have not tremendously improved in quality.

My 2000 Golf has 158,000 miles on it and the only problem I have is with my driver's side door sensor not knowing when the door is open (I can live with that)
My '87 and '95 Golfs also went for many, many miles with little difficulty.
