I live in Melbourne, Australia which is a fairly big and international city - but not to the level of NY! I have also travelled alot and come from England so have spent alot of time in London and the UK. I have American friends but have never visited and have always been really curious about NY. I love big cities!

Whats everyday life like for you? What do you do there for work & recreation? What part of NY are you from and what's your sub-culture like? What is the general culture there - friendly or aggressive? Some NY traditions etc..?

I lived in NYC most of my life and I don't think I can live any place else .I am a chef and a restaurant on 53st nx to the Waldo ff Astoria one thing about NY it;s not boring there is 1000s of things to do ,and if you like Clubs this is the city to be in .And food NY has more restaurants then any place on earth and any type.Or just take a walk on Time Square and you are in the middle of the Universe .Go to a play or go to a movie or just walk around and it is best you don't drive because the subway can take you any place in mins.

I live on Long Island, and travel around NY-NJ-CT inspecting chimneys, ducts and roofing for people who own property here. Sort of a modern day chimney sweep I am. For recreation I spend time with my family at local beaches or just in my neighborhood. I hail from here and will most likely retire here if I can afford to. Most NYers who work hard and have families are friendly. Sometimes our wealthy and politicians make you question the validity of our system, but all in all it's a good life. There are so many non-affiliated sub-cultures here it's scary but I'm sure you'll find one to your liking.
NY traditions- St patrick's day parade! Freedom!

NYC is like London they have a large public transportation system they have a cultural melting pot and lots of tourists. The people are very friendly but always in a rush.... The shopping is great!!! you can go to China town and get really god deals on hand bags and shoes.......China town is a great place for lunch. Go to the village and see all the "on the edge" fashion victims (is always fun for a few laughs) and then take the Long Island rail road and go to long beach and see the beautiful local ocean! See a Broadway play (they are not cheap) or just go window shopping on the world famous 34th street........The Museums are great specially the museum of arts!!!!!!!! Make the trip with a friend and enjoy.......Smile

I wake up at 7:00am to catch the subway train to college that takes an hour the people don't talk and are half asleep. The train is always getting some dumb delay and the people get mad but do nothing about it.

Then at college I go to class with no fear despite the lower class neighborhood.

After school I go to a cheap restaurant/bar in lower Manhattan with friends study for 5 mintues then at 9:00pm go home on the same lazy train with no fear and sleep to do the same the next day.

Oh and it rains alot.

Well, it's big. In many ways it's similiar to London. Perhaps dirtier and noisier. Lots of immigrants trying to make it. Plenty of urban underclass.

More skyscrapers which block sunlight to the streets but gives that impressive skyline. High population density with the high-rises.

Not as many large parks as London.

Continental weather - hot & humid in the summer, quite cold in the winter.

People are generally more aggressive then most other places, but it has calmed down since 9/11.
