I have recently been diagnosed with chronic anemia and getting ready to start an iron infusion therapy. The last week I have been experiencing sore aching muscles and joints and I was wondering if the anemia could cause this.

Anemia goes undetected in many people, and symptoms can be vague. Most commonly, a feeling of weakness or fatigue is reported. Shortness of breath is reported in more severe cases. Very severe anemia prompts a compensatory response where cardiac output is markedly increased, leading to palpitations and sweatiness; this process can lead to heart failure in elderly people.

This setting is not the appropriate place to diagnose, especially when you give such limited details regarding the workup.....but one thing comes to mind is that this may not be a causal relationship between the anemia and myalgia, but both may be the result of another underlying disorder.

Make sure you have had a thorough workup prior to anything like iron infusion therapy, which could mask or confuse the underlying diagnosis.

I seem to remember hearing that anemia can cause the soreness you're seeing. Good luck with the infusion!

It can be...if you have sickle cell anemia.

Otherwise, it is not a symptom of anemia. Please be sure to notify your doctor of your new symptoms so he can evaluate you for any further issues.
