The unit where I work has an armory that contains riot conrol spray, a pepper fogger, guns, rifles, AR15's, lots of ammo, riot gear.
They keep weapons around in case of an escape and pepper foggers in case of a riot. They have extra weapons because they send groups of us to the range for training every few months and with the amount of people that work there someone is always at the range.
We have to qualify with a pistol, an AR-15, and a shotgun. Otherwise, we can't work there.
They are certain duty posts that require you carry a weapon and these must be checked in and out here every shift. Those include the guys that sit on horseback watching the inmates hoe the fields, the patrol vehicle, and the outside towers.
There is one person, usually a sergeant or lieutenant, that is assigned to the armory. Only he is issued the keys and he has a very important job of keeping track of everything.

The armory is where the weapons are stored. This is also typically the place where the weapons are repaired and maintained.

Because you don't want correctional officers carrying weapons while among the prisoners (you wouldn't want a weapon to fall in the wrong hands) the armory is where they leave their guns while in the jail.

Also, if there is an incindent where the officers do need to arm themselves, the armory is the central meeting point to get their guns and get instructions before dealing with the incindent.

Any law enforcement agency keeps an armory. It's just where the weapons are kept, inventoried, and issued to officers. A prison or jail keeps an armory outside the fence/wall but still accessible to staff via secured check points so it cannot easily be taken by inmates.

I worked as a jailer for the Miller County Sherriffs Department in Missouri. Weapons are kept, but none of the lethal kind. Three stun guns, 5 or 6 O2(pepper spray) cans, and a beanbag shotgun. When you are dealing with an unruly inmate it can get hairy. When there is a riot and all you have is your hands, youre in trouble. So the correctional facility must keep weapons so that they can take any correcive action if needed in the case of an emergency.

Most prisons in the military had an armory to hold weapons of the officers or guards that worked there. As an MP while I was in the Army, if I went to a detention center they would hold my weapon before I could enter. This way there was no chance of someone taking the weapon from me. They are there for the safety of people visiting and for storage of weapons for the guards in case of riots or other disturbances.

I do not work in a prison, but the answer seems self evident.
An armoury is a secure place where weapons are stored. any place (military base, gun club, etc.) which has a substantial cache of weapons will have such a facility to keep these weapons secure.

Presuming you want armed guards (common, but not necessarily always the method) then you really do want to keep the weapons out of reach of the inmates. One would choose to arm the guards to keep them in a superior position to the inmates, particularly in supressing violence, and particularly a riot or revolt.

Of course, if you do not wish to arm the guards, and the prison, jail, etc. is in a major urban center then you could rely on local law-enforcement as armed back-up for major problems.

Lets think about this for just a minute. Prisoners are under guard by officers, who are armed with guns to do what? Quell prison uprisings? break up fights? Sounds like a pretty decent reason for having an armory.

They all have weapons, the ones officers use, and extras for various situations, A armory is a place to secure them safely.

?? just wondering where you think they should store thier tear or OC gas, thier shots guns, pistols and other weapons ?

because some of the people in the prison are actually smart (besides what ever they did) and theese people can easily escape. so they have guards to give the prisoners less of a chance to escape.
